212.6 and then some

thanks greg + jonathan! this is just what i needed at mile 102!
wish i had it at mile 209 as well though...

"you can do this. you WILL do this. just keep moving your legs. you've got plenty of time."

i probably said those 4 sentences to myself a total of 2734 times in the last 10 miles from stone mountain to decatur... by far the easiest 10 miles of the entire ride terrain-wise (flat-ish), was the hardest 10 miles for me mentally and emotionally. i knew i had plenty of time this year -- an hour and a half to go 10 miles? surely i could do it. but i finally hit my wall in the last 3 miles before the end, and my mind just started laughing maniacally in that i'm-so-tired-and-what-are-you-doing-to-me kind of way that i knew would probably happen at some point. i just didn't think it would be those last. three. miles.

but after 103, what's another 3, right? and really, that's on top of the 106 from the previous day, so you just gotta keep pushing. i admit it, i cried when i finished. had i more liquid in my body, i probably would have cried more. and y'all who know me know i hardly EVER cry so yeah... that's how good i felt about finishing.

D-O-N-E done! in decatur. after 212+ miles...
with my boys: scott, steve, and chris

i'm sure i've said it at some point (if not in this blog, then at least to friends in person) that aside from the obvious i'm-doing-something-good-for-a-cause/charity-i-believe-in reason for riding the AV, the other piece of the experience is the people you meet along the way... and honestly, without some of them, i wouldn't have been able to finish this year. so BIG thanks to chris, scott, steve, ellis, annalia, maria isabel, clay, chuck, jeff, ken, lee, and shawn... and many many more. this year's ride was so much more bearable because i had people to ride with along the way, and though i didn't feel quite as prepared, the challenge of just staying with someone so you're not out there in the middle of nowhere is enough motivation to keep your legs moving (at least until the last 3 miles. when mine didn't. :))

leading the pack...but not for long. thanks for pulling me through to madison y'all!

anyhow, for a quick recap... like last year, to keep my mind off of the heat + pain, i kept track of roadkill and other...countable things:

  • 1 cat
  • 1 turkey vulture
  • many little birds
  • many more (flattened) chipmunks
  • 2 rabbits
  • 5 armadillos (and some random armadillo parts that probably add up to 6)
  • 2 snakes
  • 3 possums
  • countless squirrels
  • 5 bottles of water/gatorade a day (probably not enough...but.... i didn't feel dehydrated...sorry mom!)
  • 2 PB&J sammiches
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 packs of clif shots (those things are delish...)
unfortunately, there were no fun prison work details this year that i had race by, so as a result, no propositions i had to turn down (i know, it's tough). but on the plus side... there were also no major injuries (that i know of... bernie did get some road rash from falling over, but he finished the ride despite his injuries) and i MIRACULOUSLY stayed upright the entire time! (though i almost tipped over at the finish on day one. and when i almost rode into the light pole 3 miles from the end on day two. but i digress.)

- my favorite "survalience" shack was still out there, but without a noose this time (hey -- it's an improvement. maybe next year, there will be one less piece of junk out front too.)
- i didn't nearly fall asleep on my bike on that 8-9 mile flat stretch of road alongside the RR tracks from social circle > madison

...on the road again...somewhere between rock eagle and godfrey, day 2

- i DID get chris b. to put on a pair of giant ladies' underpants with (faux) skid marks in them...that was an exciting lunch time activity on day one...

um...chris...what's in your panties?
(chocolate. more precisely, snickers...)

- and i didn't need to take any painkillers this time! (though this could be due to the fact that my legs were numb by the time i got back to decatur on day 2.)

BUT after all that... would i do it again? of course! the people (if i haven't mentioned enough) are fantastic, the energy is awesome, and of course, the charity and cause is amazing. at the beginning of the year, the committee set a goal to raise $250,000 and have 200 riders... last year, we had almost 150 riders, and raised $235K which was the most we'd done in 9 rides so $250K was shooting high.

i am SO proud to say that with y'all's help, our 202 riders raised over $272K this year! being a part of the AV200 steering committee has been one of the highlights of the year for me, and i can't wait to get started on ride #11... bigger (maybe) and better (definitely), every year!

so... see you on the road soon! and wait to see what 2012-13 holds... who knows, i may be inspired to ride the AIDS/LifeCycle ride (from san francisco > LA... only 545 miles in 7 days... totally doable!) and hopefully you'll join me for that journey as well :)

and now... for some photos!
this is my favorite ATL councilman, alex wan! conyers, day 1
ahhhh! my ex-work husband and in-laws came to see me!
madison, day 1
me + matthew at social circle - day 2
ride director greg!! i heart you!!
me + jessi, my co-communications lady-in-crime - madison, day 2
so all the pit stops had a theme... these guys outdid themselves in district 12, aka jersey...
with chris (aka effie) in jersey, day 2
me + jim!! my new gbf! decatur, day 2

13 May 2012

t-5 days...

until the BIG TEN ride of 2012! if only "ten" referred to number of miles... then i'd be golden. :)

2012 really has flown by; i don't know how this has happened. i don't feel nearly as ready for my ride this year as i did last year, and i'm not sure why that is... i've been on training rides, but perhaps not as many "long" (60+ miles) rides as last year. which makes me quite apprehensive for the upcoming weekend... but i guess it's a little too late to be worrying about it now, seeing as how more training now would definitely NOT help.

the one thing i will say about all this cycling that i've really grown to love (ok, maybe more than one) is that i feel like i'm in the best shape of my life, and it's opened up the opportunity for me to meet so many new and different people. granted, part of that is participating in the AV200, but when you're out on a training ride, or in my case, just recently DONE with a ride and still walking around in your jersey... people inevitably stop and ask questions, especially if they're also riders (i would not be so bold to say that i'm a "cyclist"... not yet. i think i need a few thousand more miles under my belt. that and perhaps averaging more than 15mph.)

i suppose those things are nothing unique to any hobby -- but i guess it's taken me 28 years to engage in a hobby that is more communal in nature... what can i say, i'm a loner at heart! (yes yes, i know many of you disagree. and by many, i mean YOU, my one loyal reader) but now that the reality of actually growing old by myself looms upon me (30 is old-ish, guys!) i'm glad i've finally found some way of meeting people besides hoping to talk to that cute guy sitting by himself in the coffeeshop (this has never happened, i swear) or trying to engage in conversation with somebody at a bar, even if i'm not drinking (this is extremely difficult), or even (gasp) meeting people ONLINE (i definitely don't do that. ;))

so yes. i am happy to have taken up cycling in my older age. i don't know how this post got to be so introspective... it was initially just going to be about how terrified i am of next week (i still am). oh right - and how i have NO room to be complaining about a mere 200 miles. i recently met someone climbing (ooh - another hobby that has introduced me to some interesting peeps!) who rode from portland, ME to santa barbara, CA in 71 days for bikeandbuild.org... where they bike across the country and on "rest days", you help build a house with organizations like Habitat... now THAT'S impressive... and something i can aspire to do. right. so in comparison... 200 miles? that's nothing. totally doable.

anyhow, i digress. it is now, in fact more like 5 hours before the ride, and as usual, i'm having trouble sleeping. i keep thinking i'm forgetting something...

in any case, i shall be updating peeps along the way over twitter and/or facebook... feel free to keep me entertained with comments! (how did i ever live without a smartphone?!) see you on the flip side of 200 (hopefully) and i'll let you know if i overcame the mental challenges of this year's ride! :)

april showers

nothing about this post will really be about april or showers (except for this sentence, and the fact that this is my first april 2012 post), but i needed a title.

how did march whoosh right by?! how!?!?
i suppose there was that whole week-long ski vacation with my loyal reader (hi!) and the ladies. per usual, wyoming was awesome... even if we missed the snow by a day on either side of the trip. BUT, the tetons + targhee + lemon drops is always a recipe for fun, so i'll take it. oh right, and good company.

BUT... being away from a quickly warming spring in atlanta makes it tough on that whole "cycling training"... i missed that entire one week between spring and what now feels like summer, you know - that week when it's actually pleasant outside, before the pollen counts are >8,000 and temperatures are over 50, but under 80?

ed. note: SO... it is actually NOW may... as in, a week before the ride, and i realized i a. never finished this post, b. never really kept writing... and c. HOLY SHIT IT'S MAY. so i'm just going to go ahead and post this, and put in one last post before the big ride! here are some pictures instead...how's that?

a really horribly long ride from agnes scott to the monastery in conyers, GA
(yeah, you didn't know there was a monastery out there either, did you? the things you learn!)
beautiful bridge on the silver comet trail about 25 miles out...
yes, i'm floating in mid-air to take this photo
post-ride guilty pleasures include McD's french fries + soft serve.... duh.
the hair was also looking extra good that day :)

12 February 2012

the greatest love of all...

ahh... a sad day for the music world indeed. RIP, whitney. you will be missed.

that said, only at an AV200 training spin class the VERY NEXT MORNING will the instructor have been SO dedicated the previous evening (at 3am) to put together a whitney houston tribute for class. oh man... LOVED IT. i really am channeling my inner gay man / diva... no? i will say though, at least i kept it together (unlike wesley) for the greatest love of all finale... ;)  j/k boo. i wouldn't call you out like that.

this morning was tough. though i've done some double duty back-to-back spin classes (for the past 4 weeks) something about the cold reallllly didn't "jive with me" so to speak. as in, i really just wanted to stay in bed, and keep massaging my legs. ouchie!  a HUGE difference from last week, that's for sure. mother nature decided she wasn't quite ready for spring after all... 70 to 20 + snow flurries in one week? booo.

then again... that bodes well for targhee... IN THREE WEEKS! yikes!  i CANNOT wait to see the girls (and adam. and mara's man who i haven't met, but i trust that he'll be able to hang with us). i just hope my quads are ready for all that... i'll just call it "extra training" :)

(side note... just saw it come across my twitter feed... lance armstrong is a beast. 2nd place at panama ironman 70.3 in his pro-triathloning debut? not. ok. WOW.)

so anyway... for my one (maybe two) reader(s)... this weekend's training rides were dedicated to my last two donors... thank you meg & lanny for your support! hope to make you proud in may!!

alright. off to enjoy the deceptively cold (twenty-nine degrees?!?!) yet so happily sunny day!

08 February 2012

show me the love!

i know i keep saying it, and perhaps now it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but yes. i do suck at this blogging thing. but at least i know that i shouldn't find a job where i have to update things on a regular basis....

oh wait. right. but maybe that's why i'm not good at it for my personal things...? because i do it all day at work? i'm going to go with that.

also, since i posted my new fundraising page on FB today that has a link to this blog, i figured i should at least do a bit of updating for what's been happening the past 3 weeks.  in short, nothing exciting. HOWEVER, i have been getting back in the saddle (ho ho ho i'm so funny!) and gearing up for this May...whoohooo!

things that help? the random 70 degree weather in january/february.
another pretty day at the park...

things that don't help? krispy kreme doughnuts. (and mark's KK doughnut bread pudding.... yeah, you read that right.)
mmmm...."we can help you". lies, all lies!

on those not-so-pretty weekends, though, i've been heading to spin class... last saturday was torture. 2 hours...new wave 80s remixes...no windows...sitting. spinning. 85 rpm. no, don't get out of your saddle. stay seated. THE ENTIRE TIME. MOVE YOUR LEGS. TORTURE!

and then mommy needed a hamburger like nobody's business. (side note, i really actually JUST TYPED "handburger"....wow. that's embarrassing.) even though it was horrible, i know i needed it. but spin class is getting to a point where it's like running on a treadmill for me... i find myself spacing out and drifting off, almost to the point of...ok, actually falling asleep (this should surprise no one who knows me), so i can't wait to get back outside. and as much as i keep saying i'm not ready for it to be warm yet (because where was winter? NOT IN ATL.) i'm ready to be back outside on my bike and not in 3 layers of clothing.

anyhow, valentine's day is next week and i don't really "believe" in this "holiday" (not because i'm bitter, but really... where did it come from? adam - i'll wikipedia it. or you can tell me later) BUT... if you care to show me you LOVE ME... please do it in a monetary format on my fundraising page ... pretty please? every little bit helps!

in return, i'll ride an extra mile or two for every dollar you put up. and i won't cheat. promise.

xoxo

headwinds & heifers

THAT was the theme of the weekend....

(and before i get started, i'm sorry it's been so long since i updated! basically... it's been busy. wedding in TN, graduation crap at work, and then...)

OMG I FINISHED. AND I AM SO SO SO SO SO SO TIRED (still.) it's been a full 24 hours since i got off my bike and i don't think my ass has fully recovered. i know my legs haven't... walking is still a bit torturous and i feel like my legs are going to give out on me every 5 steps i take. BUT... i'm still walking, so that's a good thing.

so the short story is:
the weekend was amazing. the ride was amazing (and amazingly long). everything about this weekend was incredible, and yes - i would absolutely do it again (i say that now, but about 36 hours ago, i was agonizing over what i was going to do about those last 106 miles. seriously painful.) to all my donors, thank you thank you thank  you! we raised over $225,000 this year which brought us to a grand total of $1 million (and change) raised for AIDS Vaccine research in NINE YEARS. i don't know how much ya'll know about fundraising, but that is an INCREDIBLE feat, especially considering there were 150 riders this year (up from 75 just 3 years ago).  so... enough tooting our own horns... (and yes, i can say "our" because i was volunteered for the steering committee for next year's ride. be ready kids...you are going to hear a lot more out of me. ;))

NOW, for those who are interested...here is the long story:
(basically, let me ramble and give you details about everything from the ride)

first...by the numbers:

1 - number of times i fell (i knew i couldn't go the whole way w/o falling once...)
2 - people i saw get carted off with injuries (more on this later)
3 - billy goat farms (they are way cute)
6 - number of bugs that flew into my face (including 1 that unfortunately went into my mouth. it didn't come back out, so i guess i ate it?)
2 - prison work details
1 - proposition from said prison work details...
2 - dogs that chased after me on saturday (absolutely terrifying)
X - i lost track of the amount of roadkill (there were lots), BUT... there was 1 really TRULY smelly squished armadillo, 1 super cute freshly hit rabbit, and 1 really sad looking flattened turtle (that thing was probably a foot in diameter. huge.)
14 - hawks (they are massive in real life)
4 - birds i came dangerously close to hitting (and i actually mean dangerously close. not the "oh, i'm afraid of birds and they're about 30 feet away" kind of way, but "omg, the winds are so strong i can't stay upright and the bird is oh shit it's flying straight into me and is not swerving!" kind of way)
2 - taxidermy establishments (are they called offices? stores? i don't really know.)
3 - cars that honked at us (1 - that almost ran me over, but she didn't honk. good for her.)
1 - train that we had to stop for
2 - 9-mile stretch where i thought i was going to fall asleep on the bike (there AND back. sadly, the SAME 9-mile stretch...seriously boring. and more importantly, lonely.)
5.5 - bananas eaten
2 - GUs (that caffeine kick was well worth it)
3.5 - blue powerades
6 - bottles of water
1 - ibuprofen
8 - miles that i didn't get to ride (more on this later -- i am so, so, so sad)
204 - miles that i actually DID ride (so i don't feel *too* bad about those eight...but that horribly proud/competitive side of me does. feel bad that is.)
16 - hours on a bike (it hurts just to think about, yes.)

anyway, friday night, my ex-co-worker rich porter flew in from ann arbor (MI) and we went to registration, etc. etc. etc. -- meet the riders/volunteers/SAG drivers/get your swag/etc.

modeling the swag bag for byron
and then they sent us home so we could be ready for our 7:30 departure. any of you who know me know that anything before 8 AM (ok, fine -- 10 AM) is really unacceptable, so of course rich & i went to leon's for an impromptu b-day celebration, and then got home at 10:30...just in time for me to do a load of laundry (my naked lady parts don't touch unwashed new clothes...that's just crazy talk...) and pack all my stuff!  and again, any of you who know me ALSO know that i have an inability to pack in a timely fashion... while yes, i am an excellent packer, i am a SLOW packer. so by the time i rolled into bed, it was closer to 1 AM than ...not.

this does not bode well for anything.

SATURDAY morning... bright and early, rich and i left...and as we were leaving the house, i saw a lovely purple box sitting on my front porch... "hm," i thought... "what could a large purple rectangular box be?" and "i didn't order anything did i?" no no, josh & chris sent me flowers to wish me well on my ride, all the way from DC... so sweet of them!!  but... we were running late, so the flowers ended up having to make the journey with us... all 212 miles. in the heat. and cold. BUT THEY LOOK LOVELY!

oooh...pretty... even after 2 days w/o water :)

we got to emory, unloaded all our stuff, i went and parked my car, and met up with kim & andrew who were awesome and came to see me off!  unfortunately, i was running around like a chicken with its head cut off -- still had to get rider numbers (don't know why they didn't give it to us at registration...wouldn't that have made sense?), route cue sheets, breakfast (minor detail), group rider pic, etc. etc. etc. in any case, i did pause long enough for a picture with them...

i swear i know how to wear a helmet...
yes, my helmet is on backwards. i realized this while i was trying to put it on, but then the dude took the picture anyway. so then i said F-IT. whatever. i'm going to rock it...

and then, by 7:30 we were off! ...heading out to stone mountain through downtown decatur and onto the PATH (which from earlier posts, if you've read... i really don't like).  but what made this part of the ride particularly fun was the light drizzly rain... and if you wear glasses/expel heat from your face like i do, you'll know that THAT is the worst... not only do you have these little beads of water on your glasses, every time you slow down/stop, you get the foggy glasses look. AND THEN YOU CAN'T SEE. i really wished that we lived in harry potter world and i could totally use the impervious spell ... sorry for that nerd moment. moving right along...

so... we get to stone mountain village which is what, 13 miles away? not even? and wouldn't you know it... yours truly does what she does best. teeter. over. while stopped. at an intersection... one foot out, one foot in... *sigh* but... like the lovely lady behind me said, "at least you got it over with early!"  indeed.

at pit stop #1- stone mountain
from SM, we headed ...farther east, to conyers / rockdale county (did someone say syphilis?) so this little 15-mile stretch wouldn't have been SO bad, had it not been for the crazy fast traffic on S. Rockbridge... holy crap those cars were flying by. oh right, and then the crazy hills out by norris lake. i had been warned about these hills, but i figured...i've been training! i've got this! and while yes, i "got it"... by the time we got to conyers, i was tired. and we weren't even 30 miles in... omg wtf.

me, leon, paul, & mike
at least the rain had stopped by this point. now it was just... a tad bit humid. nothing too terrible. after all, it was only 10 at this point... (you know, a good time to still be asleep on a weekend morning)

from conyers, our next stop was jersey, GA (mile 46.1). the booming metropolis of. (otherwise known as one little street as far as i could tell.)  this was where you could begin to tell you were well on your way into the country, and though it was overcast and slightly gray, the scenery was actually quite pretty... rolling hills. lots of green. trees. pastures. a billy goat farm. and then a prison work detail. hey -- whatever breaks up the monotony...

two things i wondered as i passed these lovely orange-clad men:
a. would anyone hear me/help me if i somehow fell and was then dragged away? (i have an active imagination and fear the worst. plus, the one sheriff didn't look like he would be of much help with the 30 men. and the cat-calls/mildly-worded (but still worded!) proposition did not help.)
and b. who gets to be the guy who holds the "slow/stop" sign? how good do you have to be? is it just luck of the draw? do the other guys really hate you? do you NOT want to be that guy so you aren't on the hit list?

questions like this kept me entertained for the next 3 miles.... definitely a good thing. and then we made it to JERSEY...whoohooo! where the awesome volunteers set up a beachy/luau theme, complete with a four-legged mascot.

ahh... jersey to social circle. my favorite stretch. why? it was a mere 8 miles! yes! on our way to lunch! real food! not just powerade & peanut butter crackers (nothing wrong with that, mind you... totally delish, but i was ready for some real food).  side story: the only other time i've ever been to social circle was back in the day when josh & i used to volunteer for the atlanta humane society, and we would have to wake up at the butt-ass crack of dawn, drive to the AHS, pick up the cutest little puppies ever, and bring them out to the SC retirement home and have puppy/old-folks pet therapy time. and then the pups would shit all over themselves on the ride there (car sickness) and then puke on the way home (over-excitement). basically, really good memories.  it was a little mean for them to make us ride past the blue willow inn on the way to the football/soccer activity pavilion where we had a catered lunch (granted, it was from sun in my belly and they have some of the best sandwiches EVER)...but i've heard that the BWI has the best southern food / fried chicken around. so -- any of y'all out-of-towners who come to ATL next time and want some good southern food... let's make a trip :) i promise i won't make you ride a bike to get there (though we probably should ride back to burn off those calories... did i mention it was all-you-can-eat? right. if ever there was a doubt why people in the south are um... larger...)

in any case, lunch was great. and then we head off towards madison, where my work-husband john was meeting us!  yay! something to look forward to!  and i seriously needed it... this was the longest, most mentally challenging stretch for me, mostly because it was boring (read: flat-ish, no turns for a stretch of 9 miles) and hot, post-lunch, and i was by myself for most of it.  you wouldn't think it was possible, but never underestimate the power of my sleeping habits (alicia -- yes, my "narcolepsy" totally was kicking in...) indeed, i almost feel asleep on my bike. i had to get off and walk around / pinch myself it was THAT bad.

then again, i didn't have it nearly as bad as mike did...who we passed about a mile into this stretch, sitting on the side of the road with leon... and when we stopped to see what was wrong, mike pulled out his epi-pen and gave himself an injection.  apparently, he's highly allergic to insect stings, and a few fire ants had taken up residence on his bike during lunch... ouch!  (he's fine now. the ambulance came, he opted to not go to the hospital, but needless to say, he didn't really finish the ride either.)

a friendly face in madison (john) & workman :)

from madison, we head further east/southeast-ish to godfrey, ga. i have never seen this place on the map. i believe this was actually the longest stretch between pit stops, but it didn't feel nearly as long as the last gap. though this was where we actually started getting into the "sticks" and boy, did i not want to be stuck out there by myself... my favorite building/sign (aside from the "yard/baby sale!" sign we passed earlier between conyers & jersey) was out here on a particularly desolate stretch of road past the "town center".  i would have stopped to take a picture, but i was exercising some discretion and smarts... this particularly run down shack (and this was legitimately a shack) had a sign as you approached that announced "SMILE! your on camera!" (the grammar error is intentional here. nothing peeves me more than your/you're misuse)... and right past that was this scrap piece of plywood with the following scribbled on it: "SURVALIENCE!"

which caused me to pause for a moment... mouth it... wonder if it was actually spelled in a foreign language... and then decided that no - the owners of the shack definitely spelled that out phonetically (hey, i can't blame them...english is not intuitive) and decided to keep going. especially after i saw the noose hanging from said "survalience" sign.

best. place. ever.

in any case, i finally made it to godfrey, where leon's sister & friends had set up a M.A.S.H.-themed pit stop... super cute!  i was definitely getting a little weary and it was already close to 4 by this point. and while we started the day with some drizzly rain, and cool temps... it had become sunny, warm, dry, and barely breezy. which isn't *so* bad, but damn is it tough after...oh, i don't know 93 miles.  it was here that the encouragement to us was, "you've only got 13 miles left!" ...oh, well, 13... what's another 13?

i felt like those were needed...

i'll tell you what.  until sunday, those may have been the hardest 13 miles i've ever had to ride. who would've thunk that 13 miles would take me an entire hour... my legs were seemingly going around in circles, but half the time, i didn't think my bike was making any forward progress. yes, it was that bad. and then there was this particularly heinous smelling farm that literally made me gag.... but then there were these adorable ADORABLE calves at the side of the road, tethered to their little calf-houses... and then that's when the dogs came. and i may have yelped. i mean, they looked friendly, but you never know. especially when they start running towards you, barking up a storm. i moved. quickly. no stopping for a picture with daisy jr.

shortly before 5, we (i) finally made it to rock eagle...whoohooo! and to add insult to injury, of course... it had to end on an uphill. after a downhill. which only made me think, "oh shit - tomorrow...that uphill back out is going to SUCK." (and in fact it did.)  but in the meantime... oh i totally got my name onto that massage list and got a great leg stretch/massage that you wouldn't EVEN believe... spent some time in the pool, drowned myself in a hot shower, ate a great dinner at a 4-H camp (seriously this was like, flashback to middle school camp...), and then passed the f-- out. or at least tried to.

one would think that being as tired as we all were, we'd have no problem falling asleep. but apparently, not the case. i kept tossing & turning all night, waking up every hour, felt every spring on that bed (but i shouldn't complain... it was a bed), and then before we knew it... it was 6 AM sunday morning.

workman, rich and i had decided the previous evening that we would leave by 6:30 to give us enough time to get to decatur square by 4 PM.  but then b-fast was late, and we didn't want to miss out on b-fast... and so by the time we left, it was 7.  THOSE 30 minutes... man. what i wouldn't give to get those 30 minutes back...why? well, because then that very nice man in the very comfortable truck wouldn't have had to pick me up about 8 miles from decatur to take me to the square so i would "make it by 4"  BOO HISS.

in any case, sunday was... rough.  i knew it was going to be tough, but as much as you can tell yourself and work yourself up for it, i don't think you can *really* prepare for it until well... you've experienced it.  every downhill i hit from the day before... meant an uphill... and while the opposite may be the same, i swear there were far more uphills on sunday. barf.  that, plus while there was some drizzly rain on saturday and then SUN!, sunday was cold.  and windy.  and then humid. and then it just got colder the closer in town we got. but let's rewind to that wind.... holy cow was THAT tough.  who knew that one could hit headwinds THE ENTIRE WAY HOME?  every turn i took, i swore that it would be better because at least the wind wouldn't be coming right at my face / crashing into my body and making me swerve.  alas, that was not the case.

it took a little less than 5 hours to ride the first 68 miles to lunch.  which begs the question HOW could i not ride the last 40 in 4 hours?  i have no idea.  i'm still a little disappointed (and i know i shouldn't be.  but you know that annoying competitive part of me?  yeah... that little bit in my brain keeps on saying, "you could've been better".  and i KNOW that it wasn't a race, but still...i wanted to be able to say i did it ALL.

*sigh*

so i missed the last 12 miles from stone mountain to decatur, but just getting back to civilization was good enough for me. from decatur, we rode en masse back to emory with a police escort, and were greeted by a whole host of people back at the School of Medicine, followed by a lovely reception and finding out that we hit our goal of raising $1,000,000 for the EVC in just 9 years, thanks to a last minute donation from one of the researchers at the Vaccine Center. that's what i like to call, amaze-balls. seriously.

so  i can't honestly say that i was deeply emotionally affected by this whole experience...not in the way that so many of the other riders i met along the way were. i am lucky enough to not personally know anyone who has HIV/AIDS, but i do know that so many people have someone in their lives that are affected daily by it. many of you know my stance on things like this; i can be somewhat of a cynic and a jerk. and yes, i still believe that it's unacceptable that HIV prevalence is as high as it is considering the fact that we DO know how it's transmitted.... but on the flip side, there are so many who either don't have the knowledge, or are unknowingly put in danger by people who don't know/don't care to share their status, or were infected before we had the information we do now, etc. that it's important to keep up the good fight. as conflicted as i am about where funding should go (education! cancer research! feeding hungry children around the world! aiding victims of catastrophic events!), i at least KNOW FOR CERTAIN where the money i raised is going when it goes back to the Vaccine Center. SO. to Dr. Robinson...Dr. Ahmed...Dr. Mulligan... and everyone else working on an AIDS Vaccine -- thank you for your tireless efforts and i hope our contributions (however small in comparison to grants you may receive) are instrumental in accomplishing our goal :)

75 and counting...

ouch.

that is what i have to say about 75 miles. you know it's bad when your backside hurts just thinking about sitting down on a hard surface... the legs don't even feel all that bad, just super tight. :-/

anyhow, i'm so glad jeff goelz called to let me know about their ride this morning; i really needed a long one this weekend :) so we headed down to palmetto again (silk sheets) and did the 50-mile & 25-mile loops... on the one hand, i'm encouraged that i didn't feel like i was going to pass out (unlike that first time i did a 50), but i can feel the fatigue and i wonder how the next day's going to feel. so... good thing workman & i are going to hit up stone mountain tomorrow (or maybe just something in town if i can't figure out the way out to st.mt. ;))

i feel like there's been a lack of pictures, so:

lee, eddie, myself & jeff at the end :)
I think part of what reallllly helped today was that it wasn't balls hot outside... a nice breeze, 70-ish (until the last 35 or so) and then mr. sun REALLY kicked it up a notch.
and that is how this is now the look i'm sporting:

SUCH a good look, no? i'm totally ready for the pool with that.... *sigh*  at least it goes well with the shorts tan. and you can't really tell in this pic, but i'm also rocking a hot raccoon eye look... yes. the entire package is super.

i know you can't wait, but you - my one loyal reader adam - will just have to wait until at least tomorrow to hear all about how the rest of my weekend fares... will i survive another 40?!?!?! the suspense is killing us both!

09 February 2011

happy (lunar) new year!

fine, that was a couple of days ago, but i'm just now getting around to celebrating this evening with some friends at casa ting.  things have been busy in the kitchen for me since january 1... i typically don't cook this much, but i'm getting adventurous.  and getting adventurous in the kitchen involves adventuring to the asian grocery marts. now i'm not a newby to asian grocery store shopping, but it never ceases to amaze me how busy they get, or how vicious the little asian (and sometimes mexican) grandmothers can be in the produce section...  BUT, last night, i was in the produce section, probably looking quite lost and distraught as i perused the daikon, wondering..how does one choose a "good one"? and this lovely elderly asian lady asked if i needed assistance. and so i asked her in chinese how to select "good" daikon, and she picked some out for me. and then said, "well -- all of these look like crap, you should really go to [the other asian supermarket] but since you're already here, you might as well get it here" (how practical of her.) pleasantly surprised indeed.

fast forward >> it is now wednesday... that was a saturday dinner.  i clearly need to focus more on "finishing things i begin"....blargh.  IN any case, dinner was a success! i only had to make 2 phone calls to mom (this is quite the improvement for me) to make sure things didn't go disastrously.... i can confidently say that my guests enjoyed dinner... or at least they're all still talking to me and no one has said anything about vicious stomach pyrotechnics as a result of dinner. as for the conversation POST-dinner... very interesting indeed. i suppose i shouldn't be surprised that at a 4-person table made up of 8-ish degrees that conversations can get a little...heated. i say it a. makes for great entertainment, and b. makes me realize how unaware i am of current events. or maybe not unaware, but disconnected i've been and i should really make an effort to be more informed so i can actually form an opinion other than, "i really don't care *that* much" (and while that may still be the case, i *should* at least pretend to care a little more than that...)

putting that on my list...

in other news, i'm taking a break from spin class/cycling today... i realized in class yesterday that my legs were telling me to "F. OFF." after a busy weekend and i was moving SLOWER THAN MUD. not an exaggeration. so instead, today... i'm going to go learn some elementary bike maintenance techniques... i figure now is a good time to know what to do if i get a flat tire... how sad would i be sitting on the side of road trying to hitch a ride if i pop my tire?  very.  and really... the potholes on atlanta roads are a little ridiculous... i think i'm going to break an axle on my car every time i drive over one, much less bust a teeny bike tire...  wish me luck. i'm not good at "fixing" things, but man am i good at being destructive.

and FINALLY, to all my loyal readers (that would be YOU, ADAM M. WEAVER), we're putting on a fundraiser this saturday for the AV200 ride... it's a six-hour spin-a-thon called SPIN TO END at the WoodPEC cycling studio on campus.  come on out and join us if you'd like! noon to 6. this saturday. win fun things like a jersey, or some awesomely designed shirts (i don't know WHO WOULD HAVE DESIGNED THEM...) meet some lovely folks, get in a workout... donate a couple of coins... whatevs :)  we would love to see you there!  i hope to stay upright for at least 3 hours... here's hoping.

30 January 2011

70 degrees in january?!?!

i'll take it.

this weekend has been BEAUTIFUL and i'm super excited to get back on my bike for a ride later this afternoon. in fact, it's been so nice that i was up at 7 AM this morning, had coffee, watched the sun rise, and am (surprisingly) still awake. it is sunday morning after all...

so today's ride is supposedly an "easy" 20-mile in-town loop; we'll see how "easy" this is... i think my challenge will be that whole "in-town" bit; i hate riding with car traffic. last time i rode in traffic, i totally bit it and now have a lovely scar to show for it. luckily, only my pride was really injured and nothing else (at least not too badly). the real update will come later... if i'm still able to move my legs... (i know i know, what does moving my legs have anything to do with my ability to type? just the fact that i'll have to move my legs to get me to my computer... sad, but true. :))

happy sunday!

ok -- here's the post-ride update. i hurt. i fell. i have a skinned knee and a bruised ego (but hey - it happens to everyone!) and i don't think i can stand up straight anymore. legs are fine, but damn is my back sore... will bake* for any volunteers who would like to give me a back massage... i know, who can turn down that kind of offer?!

whining aside, this nice, "easy" ride really was great (except for all that lying about there only being "one hill". i should know better..this is atlanta!) went from the highlands > druid hills > candler park > little 5 > inman park > highlands > morningside > ansley > piedmont park (dear GOD there were a ton of people there today.. all trying to get in that nice weather, i'm sure) > back to the highlands. if you know anything about atlanta topography, you'll know that THAT is not flat. at all. i can hardly wait for the "rolling hills" of the actual ride... i feel like "rolling hills" is going to be up for debate.  so now, it's time for a hot shower, and some quality time with "the stick." i wish i had a foam roller...that might also be good....

(*i do cookies from scratch....)
